As many were astonished at you— his appearance was so marred, beyond human semblance, and his form beyond that of the children of mankind—
I gave my back to those who strike, and my cheeks to those who pull out the beard; I hid not my face from disgrace and spitting.
For he grew up before him like a young plant, and like a root out of dry ground; he had no form or majesty that we should look at him, and no beauty that we should desire him. He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief; and as one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed.
Then they spit in his face and struck him. And some slapped him,
I can count all my bones— they stare and gloat over me;
But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by mankind and despised by the people. All who see me mock me; they make mouths at me; they wag their heads;
But he gave him no answer, not even to a single charge, so that the governor was greatly amazed.
They also blindfolded him and kept asking him, “Prophesy! Who is it that struck you?”
and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on his head and put a reed in his right hand. And kneeling before him, they mocked him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” And they spit on him and took the reed and struck him on the head.
When they heard it, they marveled. And they left him and went away. The same day Sadducees came to him, who say that there is no resurrection, and they asked him a question,
my strength is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue sticks to my jaws; you lay me in the dust of death.
And all who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers.
And they were on the road, going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was walking ahead of them. And they were amazed, and those who followed were afraid. And taking the twelve again, he began to tell them what was to happen to him,
And they were exceedingly astonished, and said to him, “Then who can be saved?”
And they were astonished beyond measure, saying, “He has done all things well. He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.”
And he got into the boat with them, and the wind ceased. And they were utterly astounded,
And immediately the girl got up and began walking (for she was twelve years of age), and they were immediately overcome with amazement.
And when Jesus finished these sayings, the crowds were astonished at his teaching,
For my days pass away like smoke, and my bones burn like a furnace. My heart is struck down like grass and has withered; I forget to eat my bread. Because of my loud groaning my bones cling to my flesh.
I have been as a portent to many, but you are my strong refuge.
And amazement seized them all, and they glorified God and were filled with awe, saying, “We have seen extraordinary things today.”
And they were all amazed and said to one another, “What is this word? For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out!”
