Heading: Positions of leadership in Church. 👍👎
Summary: In Chapter 3 of 1 Timothy, Paul gives instructions to Timothy regarding the requirements for overseers and deacons in the Church. He says that an overseer must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not a drunkard, not violent, and not quarrelsome. Additionally, an overseer must manage his own household well, with all dignity keeping his children submissive, for if someone does not know how to manage his own household, how will he care for the church of God? Deacons, likewise, must be dignified, not double-tongued, not given to much wine, not greedy for money, holding the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience. And let them also first be tested; then let them serve as deacons if they are found blameless. Wives must likewise be dignified, not slanderers, but sober-minded, faithful in all things. Let deacons each be the husband of one wife, managing their children and their own households well. 👍👎
Application Question: What is the overseer's purpose? (v. 4) 👍👎
Exegetical Question: How does 1 Timothy 3:4-5 shed light on the character of an overseer? 👍👎
Observation Question: How does a church leader's family life need to be in order, as mentioned in verse 4? 👍👎
Group Discussion Question: What does it mean in 1 Timothy 3:15 that the church is "the pillar and support of the truth"? 👍👎
Prayer: God, thank you for the church. I pray that it would be a place where people can come to know you and experience your love. I pray that it would be a light in the darkness and a force for good in the world. 👍👎
Journal Prompt: Paul concludes by saying that a church leader must have a good reputation with outsiders. Why is this important? 👍👎
